Description: Critical aquifer recharge areas are those areas that provide a critical recharging effect on aquifers used for drinking water, including areas that are vulnerable to contamination or reduced recharge.CARAs are divided into three categories depending on sensitivity: Category I - extreme aquifer sensitivity; Category II - high aquifer sensitivity; Category III - moderate aquifer sensitivity. See Thurston County Code Chapter 24.10.010 for full definitions.This data set combines soil-based CARAs with geology-based CARAs. Geology-based CARA categories were developed in conjunction with Nadine Romero, Thurston County's hydrogeologist, using available data from the Washington State Department of Natural Reources. Where an area has conflicting CARA categories between soils and geology, the more restrictive category prevails.Geology mapping at the 1:24,000 scale was only available for some portions of the county at the time of CAO update, the rest is mapped at 1:100,000 scale. Therefore it is important to not to accidentally use the data at a scale beyond its native resolution. The geology data are organized by quads. The 24k quads are: Shelton, Squaxin Island, Longbranch, Summit Lake, Tumwater, Lacey, Nisqually, Maytown, and East Olympia. The 100k quads are: Kamilche Valley, Capitol Peak, Little Rock, Tenalquot Prairie, McKenna, Harts Lake, Oakville, Rochester, Violet Prairie, Bucoda, Vail, Lake Lawrence, Bald Hills, Eatonville, and Elbe.

This change involved transforming the BFE from NAD 27 to NAD 83, which resulted a a shift of several feet.

Description: The purpose of this data is to provide planners with a history of flooding events recorded in the county. This information is compiled using authoritative data and represents the approximate mapped location of documented high groundwater flooding events for the purposes of screening. Authoritative data includes, but is not limited to, the 1997 WA State DOT infrared aerial photography. Beginning in 2016 updates to this layer began, and are in progress, to eliminate shadowing and map high groundwater using digital versions of the 1997 Aerial Photography (not available when the layer was first created) and LiDAR Contour data. All edits are verified by the County Hydrogeologist and Flood Plain Manager before being incorporated into the data. Edits are made on a case-by-case basis as time allows and when discrepancies are found and researched. This data was combined with updated wetland delineations, circa 2014, for the Deschutes Watershed Project area (TRPC) and updated with standards provided by the Thurston County Wetlands Working Group. The information from TRPC was created over several years by TRPC, Contractor's, GeoData. All edits and updates are approved by the Thurston County Resource Stewardship Current Planning or Long Range Planning Departments. This dataset was created to inform county staff and the public of where the critical wetland sites were located for planning purposes. Weeds that fall into an eradicated status are removed from this layer at the close of each calendar year. They are moved into the NoxiousWeedEradicatedSites dataset. Knotweed located in containment areas, areas in unincorporated Thurston County outside City Limits, are also shown in the Knotweed Containment Layer. This is used to inform the Amanda Permit database about knotweed on properties that must be specially contained and treated during any ground disturbing activities.
